Synopsis: After their father and mother die, four newly-orphaned Appalachian
children decide to live self-sufficiently in the mountains of rural
North-Carolina, rather than have the state realize what happened and then
split them up sending them to foster homes. Mary Call, while not the oldest
of the children, assumes the "parent' role, doing her best to make adult
decisions that are often more than she can handle. This proves a formidable
opponent for landlord Kiser Pease, who is interested in marrying the oldest
daughter Devola.
